Pune
Airport is located approximately 10 km direction of north-east of Pune in
Maharashtra state. The airport of Pune is a civil enclave operated by the Airports
Authority of India, eastern side of Lohegaon Air Base of the Indian Air Force.
Pune airport has handles both domestic as well as international flights. Presently
there are two international destinations from this airport, which are to
Frankfurt by Lufthansa and to Dubai by Air India Express.
Modernisation
:
In
August 2008 this airport has a Rs 100-crore airport modernisation plan was
launched, upcoming of the Commonwealth Youth Games hosted by Pune city. AAI was
constructed two new terminal buildings like departure and arrivals for
international passenger, measuring approx 12,000 sq. mt. on either side of 6,500
sq mt old main terminal building which was inadequate to hold the increasing
rush of air passengers and flight operations.
Future
Upgrades :
The
AAI has invest nearly Rs 20 crore in 2012 for various development expansion
projects at the Pune airport, include a three stage administrative complex,
which is located near the entrance of the airport terminal building, new
hangars for small private aircraft and a tent on the city side of the airport
terminal building.
All
the offices of the AAI as well as the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)
will be to move for new administrative block, it has been creating more space
in the terminal building. The terminal building will also house a VIP lounge
with independent reach to the airport terminal building. The airport power
sub-station is being near the entrance gate will also be shifted to the new
building, this have being free up more space for developing passenger
amenities.
New
Cargo Terminal :
There
is also being a proposal of starting cargo facility from Pune airport. International
cargo facility is an important for Pune as many airlines services want to start
cargo flights from Pune. This new project will be enable foreign cargo
operators to Pune. Pune was already declared as customs airport dated on 17
January 1997, primary for exporting perishable agricultural products, i.e. fruits,
flowers, vegetable and processed food.
